Dysregulation, losing the ability to manage the intensity of an emotion in the moment, earns Research-Informed. It rests on the well-developed science of emotion regulation (Gross's process model), one of the more robust areas of affective psychology, and on clinical work where emotion dysregulation is a central, measurable feature of several conditions. In relationships, getting flooded or overwhelmed during conflict maps onto this research and onto Gottman's physiological findings. The construct is solid; what is looser is the casual everyday use of dysregulated as a label for any strong feeling, which the research does not support.
