Stonewalling

Term/Glossary · Glossary

Peer-Reviewed

Emotional withdrawal and shutdown during conflict. One of the Four Horsemen.

Evidence

Peer-Reviewed

Stonewalling, shutting down and withdrawing from interaction during conflict, earns Peer-Reviewed as a descriptive Gottman construct. It is reliably observed in the Love Lab paradigm and tied to physiological flooding, and it separates distressed from non-distressed couples (Specific Affect Coding System; Heyman, 2001). The star is for the descriptive science. Gottman's gender pattern (that men stonewall more) and the marketed divorce-prediction accuracy are weaker, separately handled claims.
